I'm not qualified to assess whether Woody is country or folk (or both?), but this whole discussion reminds me of something I heard Robert Earl Keen, one of my favorite singer-songewriters, say during a concert many years ago. I'm not going to get it quite right, but it was something like this: "You know, when I first started out in the music business, I was considered a folk singer, and people treated me real nice as I traveled around; they were always feeding me tofu and brown rice and tea. Now I'm considered a country singer, and people give me barbecue and whiskey instead." (Pause.) "I like bein' a country singer a whole lot better."
